Peru Utilities worked with BAT and SAC field representatives to develop a set of apprenticeship training standards which include the on-the-job training outline, related classroom instruction curriculum and the apprenticeship program operating procedures. The program is registered and meets Federal requirements. It is approved by the Department of Labor so employees that complete the program receive a journeyman’s certification and card that is recognized anywhere in the United States.
This program is in keeping with our goal of raising the level of performance for the positions of Electric Lineman and Power Plant Technician. The Peru Utilities program is conducted by Ivy Tech and consists of 8,000 program hours. It is mandatory that Electric Lineman and Power Plant Technicians participate in the program.

Six of the Power Plant employees who graduated from the Power Plant Apprenticeship Program were recently recognized: (from left) John Hileman, Josh Chance, Joe Thoden, Josh Commons, Wade Hileman and Lee France (not pictured).
These employees were recognized for receiving two Certificates of Completion representing 8,000 hours of training and 576 hours of related instruction. One certificate is from the Department of Labor for the occupation of Journeyman Powerhouse Mechanic/Operator and the other from Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana for completing the curriculum for Industrial Apprenticeship Related Training for Power Plant Technician. Peru Utilities commends these individuals for their dedication and commitment to improving their skills and knowledge.
Although most power generating facilities have personnel skilled in maintenance or operations, training these employees to this level of expertise makes them competent in both maintenance and operations in a power plant and represents a uniquely progressive position in the industry. In line with Peru Utilities’ mission to provide dependable utility services and value to its customers, any economic benefits derived from the local Power Plant are passed directly along to the customers.
This training program is one way Peru Utilities exhibits its commitment toward continuous improvement through employee empowerment, education and innovation.
